We have a web site which has been online for about two months, but about a month ago seemingly dropped from Google results. I was hoping it was a temporary thing, but it has never returned. At this point, I can't even find my site on Google using <mydomain>.com, so I know that there is definitely something wrong.

We submitted this site to many top sites (over 100), Digg, some forum signatures, and a few link exchanges with higher PR sites. Was this too much, perhaps? I use Google's Webmaster tool, and it shows that I have nearly 2598 external links, but a Google search of link:<mydomain>.com returns nothing... However, the tool even states "Googlebot last successfully accessed your home page on Jun 30, 2007." and "Pages from your site are included in Google's index."

The only way which I can find our site is by using the search term site:<mydomain>.com.

Does anyone know if there is a way that we can get reindexed?

If your site is visible using site:mydomain.com, then your site is indexed.

Your first mistake was in thinking Digg has SEO benefit. It doesn't. If anything, Digg is anti-SEO (and justifiably so.)

Your next mistake is the reciprocal link game. Doesn't work, never does, it's a myth that needs to be stopped.

What's your site? There are probably other issues.

Phew, that's good then. But my site is not visible when simply searching for mydomain.com. What does that mean?

Digg definitely has traffic benefits, and that was the reason for submitting the site to Digg. In retrospect though, the short burst of traffic gained was probably mostly irrelevant and pointless.

We exchanged links assuming that it would improve our PR, and in turn, our search ranking. It turns out they became our main source of traffic. I've never heard about them hurting SEO until today, and I've actually run across a couple people who have said that today in a couple of different locations. But if it doesn't work, why is it relatively common?

Answering a question with a question, what does it mean when you can't find yourself in a search? Not knowing your domain, what does come up? Directories you're listed in? Nothing? Did you go on to page two or three, or are you not #1?

I don't know how common it is. In certain corners of the web it is, and in others, it's about as common as a homeless guy at a corporate board meeting.

If you're getting traffic from your link exchanges, though, that's what matters.

Because most people believe it works, and sometimes perception is prevailing reality, no matter how wrong it is.

How do you know you're getting legitimate traffic and not bots crawling links? Chances are if link exchanges are your primary source of the traffic, the latter is true.

Your Digg logic is sound, now that you've explained it. But as you said, Digg traffic tends to be technogeek traffic, which means that they want things that talk about Linux or whatever tech gadgets are new or whatever. You probably got the wrong end of the Digg traffic, like you thought.

Again, what's the domain name? It's hard to tell what could be going on without it.

i think it's best when you get your traffic from natural visitors or google/yahoo organic than getting your traffic from link exchange & digg. so you can do directory submission and one way link.

OP: Not sure why your website has been dropped. seaching for mydomain.com will give you the websites that have mydomain.com in them. if yoursite is not on the top list then its not in google.

Things you can continue to do post on highly crawled forums like dp or sp. There is the blog and ping thing that I have never tried but heard good reviews off.

ADAM WD: Not sure where you got your info about link exchanges but looks like you are revolutionizing the web.

link exchanges have been in use for ages and will stay in use because they get traffic. Plenty of examples on this especially in the video site business.

psylocke: I actually like the later better because it makes your website's life not depend on your rank with google and yahoo.

Good luck OP

Build backlinks, then update your site from time to time. Then do not forget creating and submitting your sitemaps if you have new pages from your website.

And the earth has been flat since the dawn of time, until some Italian named Columbus didn't fall off the edge. The amount of time people believed something that isn't true, doesn't change the fact that it isn't true.
