If I was going to run around and post this kind of stuff, I certainly wouldn't do it on a webmaster forum where pretty much everyone has already read something just like it a million times.

Just because something may be news to me, is no reason to assume that it must be news to everybody else.

What is the difference between paying like 3 dollars or however much it is to put your backlink in a directory and just using the free choice backlink?

Depends on the directory. Generally, there's no difference. Google really doesn't give much weight to directory links, if they give any at all. There are about six exceptions.
