How to get top google listing on a keyword...any suggestions would be
appreciated.

Pick an obscure keyword.

Search for the keywords, note how many results there are. Do another search, only in the title. This will tell you what the competition is.

Then go out and gather more links from respected sites with helpful anchor text. That's the hard part, and you'll probably need tens of thousands of links for "weight loss tips."

Pick more specific keywords that describe the content you have to offer, and you'll do better in the results because of less traffic, and also get better traffic.

use some keyword tools to know how many searches per month that keyword has or the keyword that you want to use.. some tools i know are inventory(dot)overture(dot)com and mcdar(dot)net.

It's really really easy. All you have to do is more work than whoever's on top now.

Of course you realize, this is really going to disappoint the "tell me the secret" crowd...

For some strange reason, hardly anyone seems to appreciate being told that the answer is good old fashioned hard work. What is it about the human psyche that leads so many to believe that there most be some little known shortcut which requires a mere pittance of effort?

I guess this partly explains why snake oil salesmen seem to thrive from generation to generation. No matter how improbable the odds, there never appears to be a shortage of folks who are more than willing to shell out for the latest magical solution.

Belief is a powerful force. Too bad it appears, (more often than not), in a misguided form.
