All you have to do is create a site with good content that people want to see. It really is that simple. If people like the site they will visit it, bookmark it, re-visit it, Link to it and tell thier friends about it.

If you have a blog you can join to any social networks and to get visibility among its members. An advertising in relevant website also helps a lot. Do not forget offline channels... to cover with leaflets and etc.

Article submission is also usefull if you have the time. Submit them to a few article directories and you can get traffic as well as backlinks.

Theres nothing new man, social bookmarking, spamming (

), forums, SEO, SEM, and link exchange.
I dont think directories is a very good source of traffic, unless its DMOZ or Yahoo!
