White papers are just content. What you are asking is whether content helps SEO and the answer is yes.

I can't see whitepapers being treated any differently than other content.

You are now talking about 2 different things:

1) White papers - they don't hold any more SEO benefit than 'ordinary' content
2) PDF's - they lack the structural markup that html has, and so they have less SEO benefit

I'm not really sure what you're asking though...

Who cares? What you should be asking is whether there is any benefit to your viewers ... the ones who come to your site. If they're useful and unique, and the knowledge is essential to some of your readers, they'll link to the page where they can find the paper they need.

There's no SEO benefit to exe files, right? Those are just bytes written in an order Windows specifies. And yet, I have no idea whose page this is, but a link is a link ... especially when you don't ask for one: http://community-4.webtv.net/CHAKAY307776/working_2/

The one that says "WebDom Viewer" goes to one of my sites. Any benefit to exe files? No. Any benefit to producing free software that helps the community? Immense.

And the last point that needs to be made is there's absolutely nothing tieing a white paper to pdf format. Although I probably won't read one in PDF, I've had nothing but trouble with the Acrobat Reader.

If you have white papers, but want to maximize their value, then output them as HTML so that the crawlers can score their on-page features.
