Learn to markup by hand and use tags correctly
Learn to correctly structure web documents
Write decent content
Communicate with other people in your specialty, make friends with them, add their links to your site, build a community.

And I will even throw in some traffic building secrets:

Update regularly

Be patient, things don't happen over night (unless you are very good at marketting )

How much is that in dollars? Can we just assume pounds is a unit of weight?

Otherwise, good post, you pretty much nailed the secret. The funny thing is that won't stop it from being a secret. It's easier, in some perverse way, to put years into looking for a quick scheme than a few days of work into a good page...
