I'm thinking about adding a blog to my main hosting site with tips on setting up sites and things. If people start linking to entries in the blog, would the main domain get that PageRank too or not? I know I should really know this, but I don't
I would think that in first place only the specific pages will have an increasing page rank. In a longer run it should have some effects on your domain to, but I don’t think it will be such great if your main domain doesn’t have a good traffic on itself.

Think about pages. If your linked to blog entries themselves link to a page then they will pass PR. Pages on domains don't receive PR from their sub domain pages simply by default - there need to be links in place.
