I think this will bring a lot of discussion.

I have a semi-large teen forum, and on there im known as "jake" the admin. It takes common sense to known that a teen forum will be filled with posts like "hey" and "sup" and stuff like that. From the start I was 'typing' like I do now, semi-professional. But I saw that the teens on the forum found it weird that I was typing correctly, and they even commented something like "hey why do you type proper? its the internet". So I began to change my 'online-personality' after that to act more like a kid. People started responding more and on our myspace i had people posting such things as "thanks for being a cool dude" etc etc.

Another example, say you own a rap forum. Do you talk "gangster" to relate to your members?

I think this should be done, for the success of the forum but it feels weird posting and knowing you're not being yourself.

Your thoughts?

Meh, I'm pretty sure people can know when you're being someone you're not.

If I started talking like: Y0 whats good in the hood son? and stuff like that I'm sure people would catch on pretty quickly that that wasn't me.

Frankly, if the personality change you have to make is so drastic, you should consider doing it from another account on your forum, so that if it doesn't go well, you risk barely nothing.

I haven't start sites that I needed to talk differently to run.

If I did though, then it wouldn't be a problem for me. I have done a good deal of acting through the years (just for fun on the side) so how hard could it be to act while TYPING?

EASY!

Oh yes I almost forgot I had that picture as my avatar...

It's not my best angle though.

I'd rather type somewhat correct. In my first ever forum, there was old people that encouraged us to type correctly, so I kinda got used to it.

I think it would be really hard to act like someone else every time I posted... I can't help but use a certain level of grammar and spelling when I type - it's not something that I can just turn off. Call me boring. LOL

Oh, and I really don't interact much on our forum, so I don't think people have a thought either way on how I write.
