Does it make much difference if you use a fixed or a fluid forum layout?

Does one work better than another?

Use fixed, then let the user choose fluid

I prefer fluid, I have a big monitor, the fixed ones are soooo small. I did a redesign of one of my forums, had the designer do both, fixed (at 750 wide) and fluid. Seems to be about 50/50 right now. I am just amazed how many people have old monitors set at 800x600 or less. I had assumed most people had moved beyond such a small resolution, but I guess I am wrong. If you can, do as Sygon said, default is fixed, but offer fluid as an option.

I think it depends on the site.

I think that's entirely true. Or, more specifically, the look of the skin/style.

I myself like fixed, but fluid is nice as well. It's nice to have an option for both, but as stated above, it depends on the skin.

For me it just depends. For example I think the fluid style here at EF is better than fixed, but at other forums I prefer fixed. I think in general I like fixed better (I run 1024x768). Usually on my forums I'd give the user a choice between fixed and fluid.
