One of the best anti spam tools for a forum right now is definitely the one referred to in that article where you have to answer a question in order to register.
I use that on my vbulletin forums, and it is easily integrated with another mod that I am using, the quick register hack.

Outside of anti-spam mods, it really comes down to what your forum "needs". I highly recommend keeping the mods down to a minimum. Install only what you need, or what will truly be valuable to your forum. Also, make sure it is coded well and secure. the more mods you add to your forum, the more you open yourself up to being hacked.
