Solely to promote your online community

How would you go about doing it?

I'd do the whole shebang...press releases, forums, articles, social bookmarking sites, newsgroups, ppc etc.

What about contest promotion? It always seems like they draw good interest when the prizes are good.

It all depends on what your community is about. I just saw someone on this forum had a trucking forum. Maybe buy advertising near a truck stop? Flyers maybe? If the person who owns this is a trucker themselves, (although it may seem drastic) put an ad on the side of their truck if they own there truck. This will be seen by a lot of other truckers and since it is such a drastic measure, people will probably visit your site just out of interest of why it was painted on the side of a truck.

I would carefully work on a viral marketing campaign. I can't really go deeper than that, because it depends on the niche of the forum.

, are there any msn auto messagers out there? Might be worth scraping niche forums for MSN address. Especially teen forums for arcades etc. Not exactly can spam compliant though ^^

I'd write content around the topic of the community. Organize the articles for access to incoming traffic in a different format than the community. Submit the articles with community link to article directories.

I'd become an expert in the area niche of my community, sharing knowledge in other forums without mention of my own community in my replies but with the link in the signature.

I'd find a content website in my niche and partner with them, exchanging links for prominent placement. They have content. I have community. Put them together for mutual benefit.
