Hi all
I' am panning to build a community website, where visitors can write their own threads, upload pictures and videos, write comments on other users' threads, and so on ... with or without login. Can you guys please advise me which CMS is suitable for this ? or that covers all these functionalities ?
Thanx

I would say Joomla, it is one of the most popular CMS as well as having a huge array of plugins.

by "threads" do you mean like a blog? It sort of sounds like you're talking about a forum but if you're going for a more advanced profile kind of setup, such as myspace or something where each person gets a little bit of space to do whatever, then you'll want something like dolphin or another social media framework. I'm not sure I understand your goal for the site.

I've been using joomla for more than a year now and it works fine. Drupal is another good option.

Maybe try e107? It's got a decent bit of modules, but the templating is killer...

Sounds like a forum to me. Vbulletin(not free) like this forum or PHPBB, which is usually available in your host Cpanel. Or joomla which has several components for messageboards.

Check out www.booneex.com - this is great community software.
I have been using joomla for over 3 years now and would never build a social community with this.

Just my 2 cents, for whatever it is worth.

Sunflyer speaks the truth. Joomla is not a good solution for a social networking site like the OP wants.

I have been using joomla for years.. When they first started as Mambo. You can download community components and various plugins.. Community Builder is a decent one.

I've been using Joomla for a few years now for my social network like site and it's great but buying modules and components can work out more expensive.

As mentioned above, you need to decide on the core requirements for your site first (community participation, SEO, monetization, low server performance overhead, etc)...

Joomla (and Drupal) are full-featured CMS systems that will undoubtedly offer all the features your site may need, but they also will undoubtedly require far more development and administration effort. They are also clearly more server resource intensive than lighter weight solutions such as WordPress. Again, there are also many efficient forum systems that are integrating social networking aspects; my favorite free ones include MyBB, SMF forums and, to a lesser extent, PHPbb . The big paid forum providers are IPB (Invision Power Board), vBulletin and UBB.

The best would be to visit those software sites, look through their existing demo sites, but more importantly, actual developped sites and see which one fits your business model and budget (both deployment and operational) most closely.

Keep in mind that the software license and development costs are often the least important component; there is a significant effort required in managing and fostering a successful community.
