How can such a basic principle be hard to apply? It is something that is taught by every religion.
The Christian phrase is "As you sow so shall you reap" ( from the Bible Galatians VI "Whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap." )
It is a principle that Buddhists live by every day.
Lets bring that into the Internet era and the original "social media sites"; Bulletin Boards and their descendants, the Forum.
With a forum, the more you put into it, the more you can get out of it. Be a useful, helpful member and when you need some input there will be more than enough people prepared to assist. Be a leeching member and only take information away then eventually no one will help when you may most need it.
The same holds true for the likes of blogs, personal profiling sites (Facebook, Myspace etc), "Bookmarking" sites (StumbleUpon etc), Information sharing sites (Digg, Technorati etc).
If you join these places with the express intent of "plugging" (spamming) your own content or site and maybe those who may have paid you for such a "service", expect your tenure there to be short lived and essentially fruitless.
But on the other hand join these places with the intent of finding new information to help your business, pass on information that has helped you in the past, gather new contacts, "meet" new people, see and (hopefully) understand different cultures and their needs and points of view. You may very well come away with a different angle on how and where to target new markets; How to word your "sales pitch" for different markets; Where to find different products at the right prices etc etc.
It is a "Brave New World" out there, help it grow and you can grow with it. Stifle it by trying to make it be what you think it should be and you will be pushed aside.
