How do you direct traffic from your forum/blog to your sales site?

It has been mentioned and recommended to me that a good method for driving traffic to a sales site or to a services site is to offer content, and that some people acheive this through blogs and forums.

So im just starting to research having my own forums and own blog (possibly multiple ones).

What id like to know is are these typically kept seperate from the sales/service site itself, or simply made subdomains?

Also do you blatently advertise your site by trying to direct people to it, more subtly by offering only when people ask about it, or at most just having a link in your sig.

How do you convert bloggers and forum browsers into customers?

Thank you.

One of the ideas behind running a blog is that a blog provides informational content. It's hard to attract links to a sales page, but people will link to informational content. Naturally you have to produce that content.

Because blogs put out rss feeds people can subscribe read your content without actually visiting your site. That might seem to go against using them, but it's actually a good thing since it can keep people consuming your content.

Usually you don't want to do hard selling on your blog. You're posting to give visitors something valuable. In doing so you can attract links to your posts which ultimately helps all the pages on your site rank better. You can also generate a loyal and even passionate audience who go on to recommend you.

Some people run a blog on it's own domain and some run it off their main domain. I prefer running it on the same domain since it attracts links to the domain, it's easier for me to manage that way and the rest of the site is right there.

In my case I sell services and the blog helps convince people I know what I'm talking about. So while I don't specifically mention my services on the blog or pitch them the blog still helps sell those services.

When choosing a topic choose something related to what you do, but don't make posts sales pages. Make them information.

Blogs also help to make you more transparent. Trust is a big issue online. In order for someone to buy from you they need to trust you to the point where they'll give you their credit card info. By sharing your voice on a blog you can help gains the trust of potential customers.

A good place to learn more about blogging is ProBlogger. Even better is to just read some blogs. Many of us here have blogs and if you look to the left under our usernames you'll sometimes see people's latest post. I don't think anyone will object if you click on the latest post and see what blogging is all about.

The idea with forums is similar, though in the case of a forum it's the members who are creating content. It can take awhile to build a forum since there's a kind of catch22 where people don't want to join an inactive forum, but you need those people to make the forum active.

You could start a blog, build up subscribers and if you're getting a good amount of interaction in your comments set up a blog so your subscribers can populate the forum.

While both can be great ways to market yourself, understand that both take a lot of work. You don't just launch one and get results. You're better not having either than having one without devoting time to it.

So in your case you use a blog to give you credibility and only have subtle hints/word of mouth advertiseing. You also prefer doing something like yourdoamin.com as your sales page and then yourdomain.com/blogname as your blog for the sake of search engines and such?

I have the time, the will power, and the knowlege to start either a blog or a forum. Im currently a prominent member in some other forums (unrelated topics but all forums operate realativly the same), so i think i have a clear idea of what it will take.

Since i have generally no idea what rss feeds and blogs really are (i understand the concept of a blog, i even have a friend who has one, i just dont get it lol), i think a forum would be my best aproach.

Thanks for the input, and i look foreward to others input

If you can create content a blog is easy to run. You really don't need to understand any of the technical details of rss to run one. It'll be much easier to start a blog and start producing content than it will to build up a forum.

A way that you can get around direct selling is to write informative blogs about how to use your products instead of why they need to buy them. If you need to, you can just provide a link to that product page then. It provides potential customers extra information about your product without feeling pressure to buy. I'd imagine it wouldn't hurt for SEO purposes either.

1. Create Community around your blog/forum.
2. Don't directly pitch them on your product.
3. Talk about the product, and offer insightful information on the product.
A perfect example is Gary Vaynerchuk from winelibrarytv.com. He has a vlog that talks about wine and engages his community. He doesn't tell you to buy wine directly from his store. Instead, he offers his audience an experience.

Now, now...there's no need for that. Glad I could help, though.

I agree with vangogh, it is not advised to do hard selling on your blogs. You can, however, put links to your selling site seamlessly. Make articles closely related to the product you sell (but not review), and put a link to that product inside the article. On the product page, create a short (or long) review on the product. All you have to do is say that further review on the product can be found (place link), and people who are interested in your product will click the link.

Just make sure you present review first, and put the buy button concealed (but not that concealed) at the end of the review. I use this trick many times, and it works like a charm

Good luck!
