but seriously, how much do you think those guys are worth?

I mean, I doubt they went through all the trouble of creating software, handling free-customer complaints, providing servers especially suited to this purpose for, well...

I was thinking about doing something similar, just trying to get a gauge for how well these guys are doing for themselves.

I think they are doing just fine. It would not be wise to duplicate them unless you have something unique that will make even some of their users migrate to you.

I never see forums ran on proboards. I do see tons and tons on vbulletin though

Proboards is NOT an installable forum system like VBulletin or Invision, it's a forum hosting system where you can create a free account and set up a forum for whatever you are interested in. Proboards then show ads on your forum and they have been around for 7 or 8 years at least.
You don't need any hosting or a database to use them. So they used to get lots of "fan" forums from people who had Tripod or Geocities sites.

I believe the last number I heard there when I was a regular member on their support board was in the area of 3 million. I have a lot of respect for Pat (the creator) - its an amazing success story of building something from the ground up and sticking to it.

wow proboards i haven't heard that name in ages, i'm not too sure they will be doing well their product doesn't attract me (and neither does their site) if i wanted a forum i would look at whats available to me then go with what i needed, for example if compared with invisionboard, phpbb and vbulletin proboards wouldn't even score plus the forum era is over everyone already has one but like i said the rivals offer much more.

I'll say first, I'm not advertising or saying Proboards is the the best thing since sliced bread.

But Proboards can't even be compared to phpBB or IPB. Proboards is remotely hosted software. You register on their site and get http://mysite.proboardsXX.com and you're on your way.

I'm a phpBB or vB person. But way back when I didn't know the difference between flatfile or mysql, and just wanted my own little forum to play king administrator, Proboards was perfect.
