Opera, makers of the Opera browser have announced a way to integrate social media with the browser.

The new thing is called Opera Unite.

Looks interesting. By integrating a server in the browser, it creates a truly distributed social networks.

I've haven't read to much on it yet, but from what I see it does look interesting. I wonder if this will be the thing to give Opera some market share.

that's hard to say. Since, any browser could be used to view the sites.

OTOH, it could be an easy way for people to temporarily host pages while developing and getting the opinions of others.

I think it's big advantage will be as a form of a peer to peer web

I just updated from 9.6 to 10.0 with Unite. Its been working well so far. I'm particularly interested in the web server service. Out of the box you can only use static HTML but I'm trying to get PHP installed. If I can ever find my windows xp CD I should be able to get it working.

They actually have a server-side javascript API that you can use instead of PHP.

Here's an example blog:

I did see a mention of possible legality issues given the file sharing capabilites. Not sure how it will play out, but it'll be interesting to watch.
