I too think for using twitter as its growing so well in the market and many people are taking advantage of such site.

It depends on your niche. If you are in hosting, you may want to let your clients know about your company's updates and so on..

If you are a freelancer, provide info that people will find it interesting to read. Otherwise, nobody is going to click your tweets.

If you can afford to give freebies, that will be the best thing to attract people.

I think Twitter can be useful but not for the reasons most of you seem to think.

I put my Twitter feed on the home page of my sites for two reasons:

1) User Trust - If visitors can see that there is some kind of pulse on the site, content regularly being updated they are more likely to stick around. One of the first thing web users look to discover is whether there is still a real business running behind the scenes, or if it is some zombie site from the 90's, set up but abandoned.

2) SEO - It is widely believed in search engine circles that Google gives extra points to sites with freshly updated content.

And if somebody finds your Tweet posts interesting enough to REALLY pay any attention, well that is a bonus. But it's not easy to be engaging in just 140 characters or less. You need to do something off the wall ( literally! ) like this guy:

This all makes sense to me. I must admit, I tried Twitter, and don't really get what's all that fun about it.

It does seem like a lot of work for little benefit to me too. From a marketing angle, the whole thing looks like one big hyped up toy to me. Everybody following everybody, and not too many actually reading what they're following?

But, some people swear it's going great for them, so who knows. Like anything else, I suppose there's no one answer for everybody.

In order to make the best use of Twitter you need to have followers who are more suited to your niche and post tweets that are of use to others.
