Twitter as ChrisHirst said, is ONLY good from a marketing perspective IF you have something worth saying that is worth other people listening too...
Others have said you need lots of followers. To be effective this is true, but even this does NOT guarantee success. It's not a matter of picking up random followers.
Twitter requires a LOT of work to get a little gain. Basically you have to have to frequently talk about stuff others want to hear about or are interested in... and this may have absolutely NOTHING to do with the products/services you want to promote. You have to become part of your followers' communities participating in all types of discussions about random "crap" basically.
It is said that no more than 1 in a 100 tweets should reference the product/services you are attempting to promote... many use an even higher ratio... like 1 in 200 or 1 in 500 tweets. "Why is this?" you might ask...
Well, if you have 50000 followers and every few tweets you are talking about your great product/service that you're promoting, by the end of the day you're likely to have a handful of followers because people are going to unfollow you. They don't sign up for twitter so you can spam them with advertisements... they sign up so they can shoot the sh*t with friends and meet cool, funny, interesting people online.
So again, it takes a LOT of work to get even little benefit from social sites like twitter. Over do it, and you're dead.
