What business benefits have you received from Twitter?

Having been on Twitter for a while, I'm curious as to how others have benefited from it.
- How has Twitter made money for your business?
- How has it driven traffic to your site?
- How are you tracking Twitter and what are you tracking?
- How have you been able to gain a list or following from Twitter?
- Has your return on investment (ROI) for the time you've spent on Twitter been profitable?

If this was posted a year ago I would have told you about my experience with Twitter. But after quitting a year ago, and just recently rejoining Twitter, I'll have to get back to you on these questions. :P
Though from what I remember, Twitter did bring me alot of traffic to my blog and alot of readers too.

I have been posting to twitter (through the twitter API) but so far I have not got any referrals from twitter (I checked my access logs) and most (if not all) of my followers on twitter seem to be bots...

That's a given for twitter. It could be more useful to have some of your friends on there

Do you think if enough bots start following more bots, with more bots following them it would create a vortex and the whole thing could be sucked into a parallel universe?

How do you get a lot of people to follow you on twitter? i haven't used twitter for a marketing campaign yet, I imagine you have to have so many followers for that to work to your advantage, right?

well you can write programs to search twitter for certain keywords, and if you find them you start following them automatically. i post about 20-30 tweets every day so i guess i show up in their results quite often.
that said, i checked my referrer log for the past month, only 1 visitor came from twitter. so i'd say twitter is useless

I occasionally post to Twitter. Although I link to it from the websites related to my business, I don't consider it a part of my business model, and post things such as sports scores, things I read in the news, and whatever else I happen to be thinking about.
If I blogged more, I think Twitter would be more important to me, since it gives another avenue to tell people about your latest post. But I don't, and so I don't have that many active connections.
I usually block accounts if I think it's a bot.

If you think you're going to get traffic by auto following people because you searched for a keyword and they just happened to have shown up in the results, I would /delete twitteraccount.
If you want followers, retweets, and subsequently... traffic... you have to invest a LOT of time with each individual. If you follow peeps, they will often follow you back just to see what you have to say... If after some period your not communicating with them on a daily basis, they are going to unfollow you. If they see that you are only talking about the product, service, web site, etc. that you are trying to promote... they are going to unfollow you.
If you want followers that are going to stick around, participate in their day-to-day conversations and discussions about their every day life... then once every 100, 200, 500 tweets send out a tweet about the product, service, web site, etc. that you want to promote. If you've been participating in other's conversations, they might follow the link to that which you are promoting. If they actually find it interesting, they might retweet it to their friends/followers.
There is no such thing as a "free lunch". Marketing via twitter requires a BIG investment in time... with frequently little or no gain. If you want to benefit from social media, you have to accept that there is a huge learning curve and time investment over often a long period of time before you start to see the potential benefits of social media.

It seems that twitter is as I always thought, a complete and utter waste of time, should mention I have never seen a twitter result on page 1 of google.

Ha, ha! That's funny, thanks!
I think this is an important question, and you should ask God for the answer. He's waiting online right now to take your call, no kidding!

So why do it? Why all the buzz about social media? Why is your username Social-Media?
Seriously, I admit, I don't get social media from a business perspective, for the reasons you cite pretty much.
It seems clear many many people find chatting online fun, but it seems like a real business might find more productive ways to spend time?
He said, as he chatted online, to no measurable benefit...

I'm beginning to believe that Twitter really has no measurable business value unless you have a large list or you are merely using it for information. If you're under 10,000 followers, you probably won't get much out of it.

Unless you manually select your followers, you won't really see "value" using twitter. If you expect direct sales, just forget about it. If you want to build a list - few mediums a better for driving traffic...

twitter can fetch you great deal of business benefits but you got to first make your own niche and a good number of followers. Personally speaking i have been able to expand my baseband of clients via Twitter.

Maybe you are just promoting the wrong "stuff"
I mean, lets face it!
The average "twit" isn't going to have much interest in "Diesel Engines" now are they!!??
Marketing is about getting the right products in front of the right audience not, as many seem to believe pushing something in front of everybody until they buy it just to make you fu go away
