i'm creating a website for a very small community of about 200-300 users.

the homepage will have various information on the community. i wanna create websites for all the users registered like username.mydomain.com or mydomain.com/username

is there anything in php/mysql that could do this? tried searching in google and hotscripts but came out with negative results. wordpress mu doesn't look promising. besides i want the users to have complete control over their content like that of the good old geocities (its down now though)

I don't know how well Pligg would work here. It's purely a social bookmarking site and it sounds like he's looking for more of a social networking solution. Pligg also doesn't have support for creating personalized websites like user.mydomain.com.

I would give elgg a try and see if that is what you're looking for.

Most social networking programs allow people to do this dont they,

Giving people a page at

yoursite.com/username

Wordpress is for blogging thus wouldnt do this, so my advice just look at social networking software, but not sure if ive misunderstood ur question lol !

Have you considered using WordPress MU? Each user can have their own blog.

wow Hivemaker seems like exactly what i'm looking for but a little out of my budget. this is a non-profit and so can't spend such amount on it.

If a blog format works for your application then WP MU would work giving each users their own blog. You get so much functionality w/ WP out of the box, WP is really easy to learn/use, and the development community support is tremendous.
