It's probably more of a superiority thing. Forums where you exchange and discuss knowledge will have many regulars with much higher post counts. Being a regular, one would most likely be regarded higher since they've been around longer, have made more contributions to the site and are 'known' by other users. Not always, but generally this will be reflected in the post count of a user. Also things like post count dependent titles can have an effect on this too.
