I have been reading various methods to make money on facebook via creating fan pages and getting a ton of people to sign up for the page....

OK, so after you have alot of sign-ups then what?

I just looked at a couple fan pages that both had over 5,000 fans. I was looking around to see what someone would make money on and all I saw was a couple ads over on the right for medicare supplement insurance (non related to fan page) and something about doughnut coupons (again non related)

What am I missing? Does the owner of the page just send those 5K fans of that particular interest just a bunch of emails somehow related to the topic and hoping they buy something?

Is there something more to it? I know it's a newbie question, but then again, i am a newbie.

They aren't making money directly through Facebook. They use Facebook as a way to build fans and interact with them. The money is made on other sites. Think of it like this. Say you have a freelance business offering accounting services. You might join your local Chamber of Commerce or other networking groups in order to meet people who might be interested in your services. You won't make any money directly at those meetings, but you will meet a lot of people and interact with them. You'll hand out business cards and make new connections. Some of the people you meet may very well contact you later to hire you.

yes people are makin money with facebook but not directly. people are just using facebook as a medium to let know their business and websites through fan pages and money making thing goes on their own sites. as if there are valuable members of ur page and interested in what u offer then u might get a deal going and make some $$$

there actually lots of ways: if you can Develop Facebook Apps then thats one, you can also sell in FB MarketPlace, PPC Advertising, Affiliate link, you can even get new clients there....

Its like you create a fan page and then send them websites (or links) which have ads (cpc, cpm, cpa) on it. The more fans the better chances of making more money.

Of recent, facebook is cracking down on such activities.

U use my fan page of 126K fans to make money. It helps me get traffic to my sites and optimize my adsense ads.

They use Facebook to promote their stuffs. Some of Facebook user now selling stuffs through Facebook.

VERY few people who try will actually succeed in making money on Facebook... Hell, Facebook themselves can't really figure out how to make money with Facebook. It is very rare that a fan page or app is going to make you much money on this site.

Very good thread. Facebook is extremely good way to develop contacts and then direct them to your website or business. It is also great for sharing information.

Yes I read a few years ago that Facebook could not make any money themselves yet. They do get money from the makers of Farmville etc. And the ads they run down the right hand side of pages.

And some Russian Billionaire paid millions to get a good share of it.

A lot of people spend a lot of time on Facebook.

I think it is about time that Forums such as this had a dedicated Facebook Forum.

I only just found this "Social Networks" forum today !

You can put your ads on facebook and increase the amount of people becoming your new clients.Facebook itself is an enormous field for potential visitors/clients for your website/store.

It's a great way to remind your fans about your website also. They may not have logged into your site in a while, but if they see something on their facebook feed it reminds them to check in. --> traffic
