I just read the facebook have released a feature for marketers called facebook sponsored stories. It seems as though companies are able to sponsor people's activities on facebook and have them shown on the right hand side in a sponsored stories section.
You can sponsor likes, check ins or actions in specific facebook applications and page posts.
