I don't know if it fits here in this category but I am curious if you/anyone here encounter posters in a forum who made heating argument or debate or differing opinions from the admin or moderator; how will you deal with this kind of problem?

I have seen this type of thing on many forums and feel that it is healthy to have strong debate and to hear more sides of story as long as it does not get out of hand. Forums normally have rules and regulations that disallow certain things like swearing, etc. The penalty for such an infraction could range from a warning to withdrawal of certain privileges to outright banning - depending on the severity of the infraction.

If it is specific to this forum it should be here or here if not, it should be here

is that really a problem for people to have different opinions? I think when the person is unable to keep civil, he should be ignored or banned.

Differences of opinion are good for discussions and at times discussions do become heated. It happens offline and it happens online too.

There's nothing specifically wrong with the disagreement. The issue is about how people disagree. For example you shouldn't allow people to call each other idiots or make their disagreement personal. If you admin or moderate a forum where people are going too far delete the posts where things go too far and make it clear that people need to show respect for each other even while disagreeing.

If you're a person involved in a discussion that you think has gone too far the best thing to do is often remove yourself from the conversation and move on to something else. Usually when an online argument reaches the point where people are just shouting names at each other, both parties look foolish.

One thing that bugs me are moderators who cannot tell the difference between a discussion and differences of opinion and insults.

I had one the other day on a CSS forum where, when the OP finally posted a link instead of code snippets, and I told him that I couldn't actually see the site properly to find the "issue" as I have a problem with certain colour schemes, this one was light blue text on a grey background.
He then replied that he disagreed with my "opinion".
So I pointed him to the WAI guidelines, section 508 regulations and an article where a similar problem cost Target six million dollars.

So the moderator decided that pointing out where a web site contarvened a LEGAL requirement was an insult.

Now there was no underlying sarcasm, no (not so) subtle suggestion that the OP was an immature idiot and should go have his nappy (diaper) changed.

In fact I was being helpful, maybe that's why he was confused.

Yeah, sometimes it's hard to tell one from the other. Not so much in the example you gave since that sounds pretty clear. I think being able to tell the difference often comes down to knowing the individuals.

It also depends on the standards you decide to set for your forum. Those standards are going to be subjective. Is sarcasm being insulting or is it an attempt at humor? Is it always possible to draw a clear line between the 2? Sometimes you have to make a judgement call and you may not make the right call.
