Favicons only show up in 4 areas that I am aware of (For branding potentials). Browser URL box, Tab headers, Favorites, & Social Bookmarks. - Favorites on the person that saved it as one can see.
- Browser Box, Anyone surfing your site can see.
- Tab headers, people on your site with a tab open can see in addition to the browser Box.
- Social Bookmarks, You can see as well as others that have the ability to see different members bookmarks (Depends on the bookmarking system).
All in all, while it may not be a large leap, it is a type of branding that aids in visual stimulation. as we all know people remember things differently, while some remember textual or verbal experiences, others remember Visual.
Having the additional visual branding option can't hurt, but it just might remind some to check back & see what the site / company is up to lately when they come across the favicon image again in one of their lists. Not to mention, the Favicon gives a user a more established feeling when on a site, rather than a generic one.
Just my view on it
