I think this step was taken/imposed to ensure that members didn't post "unsuitable" images (you know what I mean) and probably to stop the threads from becoming bloated with lots of space taken up by signatures, hence the 3 line rule too.

Agreed, I have had problems with my forums where people have had too big pictures or it just filled the forum up with crap
HOWEVER, that said, it seems that alot of the time on alot of posts, there is room to spare because the left postbit is bigger than the post... also perhaps we could have restrictions on the width/height of the signature. It wouldn't be much different from moderating current signatures because I'm aware WT does not allow signatures with too many lines and they still need moderating to keep them in check plus theres vbulletin mods for this stuff.
No moderators don't need to work on the current thing - it is automatic. Try making a signature with 5 or 6 lines and you'll see it doesn't allow it. I think us moderators would have even more work to do if we had to moderator all signatures too.
