I'm not sure if this is the way it's supposed to work, but isn't it supposed to notify me of *all* replies made to a topic I subscribe to?

I checked my email after I just got up this morning, and noticed someone had replied to a subscribed thread only to find out there is like 8 new posts before that one which I was notified of.

Usually you are notified once of a new post and then not notified again until you have re-visited the thread.

Interesting.

Sometimes I only get one notification, other times gmail tells me there's an "update" to the current message from the forum while I'm reading the first one.

I haven't figured it all out myself, but I have forums on here that I'm subscribed to and get daily updates to make sure I don't miss anything (like the mod forums) and then threads where I'll get notifications of responses -- sometimes they come in while I'm on the thread too, but that's generally for updates that have happened while I was viewing.

I got an email indicating that you replied just now while I was looking at another thread.
