I'm well aware of the fact that this forum is trying to cut down on sig spam.

But while viewing this forum as a guest I noticed that everybody's sigs were replaced with:

You need more than 0 posts to view signature links

You need more than 0 posts to view signature links

You need more than 0 posts to view signature links

I must say this really makes the forum look like crap if you're not logged in, and even if you are, you apparently can't see them until you make a post.

Many people spend a long time reading before they make a single post. And forum threads show up alot in Google search results. I thought this was a glitch at first.

Apart from the lack of visual appeal, it should also be noted that many people in this forum have useful information in their sig links. Not gonna drop any names, but I've checked out many members sig links.

Just my 2 cents. If it's always been like this and I just never noticed, then I apologize for starting this thread.

And if anybody wants to jump in and tell me I'm full of it, go ahead. Just please keep in mind that this the "Suggestions and Feedback" forum. And this particular thread is a little bit of both.

Search engines crawlers view the forum as GUESTs as well. Therefore. ..........

Not sure if you were implying this as good or bad, as search engines can't see signature links if they are accounted as "guests":

These anti-spam measures are smart, likely the one thing I can approve of since the hostile takeover and effective slaughter of WT. They don't know bupkus about marketing or branding, but don't you dare try to spam them.

And they can fold up a whale so teeny it can fit in your pocket!

Well, it's a clear indication to the sig spammers who check the cached pages, that their signatures and the links are going to be useless for "there most impotrant keywrods"

But for people who may actually be interested in a members signature after reading their posts it can be an incentive to sign up.

Maybe changing the message to "Please login to view links" would be less contentious?

So basically us good members pay a price of not getting our sig links crawled by search engines just to stop spammers.

Quite a bad tradeoff imo. :/

If the purpose of this is to stop people from using Tycoon Talk (still can't get used to that name) for the purpose of backlinking, why not just make the sig links no follow.

Every spammer worth his (or her) salt has the no do follow plugin uploaded to Firefox. Surely this would be a deterrent.

It looks like you need 1 post before you can see sigs. How many people viewing this forum do you think have never posted? 90% maybe...?

I viewed forums for months before I signed up for one.

And the newbies are the ones that would benefit the most from some of the information in these sigs. As a matter of fact, I just went through one of Chris Hirst's links, and I now know EXACTLY what the Google dance is (or was). Good reading material for a newbie.

And I don't think anybody's gonna sign up and post just to see the sigs...I wouldn't.

Just my 2 cents...

Nope, but they are more likely to sign up if there is more good content than "Tnx for you post" or "I am interesting to this" kind of posts and that reduces when the signature links are worthless.
One forum I mod at has a very low spam problem primarily because sig links are not shown to guests (including SEs) so the forum is not on any spammers lists anymore.

Requirng a minimum post count to have a signature just leads to annoying idiots like this one.
