if you were on a Mac you could make a widget from the site, excluding the header area...

Maybe for Freelancer yes, but not for our forum.

They claim they want members and this and that, yet big banners like that usually turn people away.

Also having to scroll down more than before will turn people away.

Look up at the address bar, this is Freelancer.

They'll probably test the click through rate on it, and if it's low they'll switch to something else. I don't think it will work well because it takes you a few seconds to figure out what it even is.

First you see the TT tagline, then the logo contest thing, then a couple seconds later you realize it's an ad for outsourcing work and offering services. I've actually been meaning to check out Freelancer to outsource some linkbuilding, but have had no urge to click that ad.
