On a UK keyboard the tilde is next to the enter key, above the hash symbol, or what you Americans call the pound sign. I managed to erase an entire website this way, because emacs stores backup files as filename.html~ or filename.php~ , and I wanted to clean out the old backups, I typed rm *.html at my command prompt and then searched for the tilde key. Because I was looking at a UK keyboard and the shell I was using was set up with an American keymap, I had to resort totrial and error and accidentally hit the enter key on the way round, thus deleting everything in sight. Fortunately I had been doing extensive testing of the site and recovered everything from my browser cache....
