I had a hard time just to register for this site and I don't know if its just me but that little image verification, I went through about 12 of those and was about to give up and my last shot I registered. Just kind of piss me off, I was entering the exact words inside of the box of what the image showed but yet I was still wrong, I even took screenshots of it but also that "Refresh Image" thing doesnt work as well, when I clicked it, it just showed the same image. Anyways I figured you guys might want to fix that or maybe its just me but I had a struggle just to register.

This is all because of spam bots and things like that.
Image verificationis having to become more and more difficult to crack becasue the technologie is getting smarter and smarter.

when it was first done image verifications, was able to just make a few standard letters appear as if they were typed by the authorer. however now there are bots(software)which can "read" it. and work out what it says and therefore get past it. so now it has to be all over the place etc, i find it very very annouying when i find one which just wont accpt that it looks like what im typing lol.

many times, i have missed out because even after 20 minute of tring to enter the bloody code it still denied...

There's another method that some admins are trying which involves simple questions like "what is 2+2" and you'd need to enter "4". Perhaps making the image verification a bit easier, then adding this, would make it easier on us humans

That is a fantastic idea that can easily be extended to more complex questions (even a guide on how to find the answer with varying steps per question). I too have felt a bit pissed when trying to enter what I think the image looks like just to find, over and over again, that I apparently can not read.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that is image verification illiterate!! Some of them drive me absolutely crazy! I would much rather answer a question than try to figure out of that is a 1 or a 7, etc.

I think a simple question would have to be put in a image verification system though, because if a program can be written to "read" some image verfications then surely it could read a question like 1 + 2 and calculate it its self...

i supose word would have to be the option...

The question would be unique to our site, which would be what makes it a good captcha. No doubt it is easy for a bot to crack, but it isn't worth the effort for a spammer to create a custom bot just for our site, and keep updating it for each question we decide to add.

Do any of you know how to create the code for such an endeavor to where it would be user friendly, just add new quesiton [here] type of thing. I am running my own site, am learning as I go. I have html down cold, but need to get hip to PHP.

Anyone with the code or desire to create it, I would gladly purchase it. I am desperate to stop getting hit with bandwidth issues due to the dang bots.

You verify that you are a live human by doing what the questions asks.

Example: How do you spell web backwards? bew is the correct answer.

If you know just a little, well more than me

php, you should be able to add a simple routine to any script. The question and answer are entered from the control panel and the user must match the correct answer on the form.

This type of system does require a little active management from time to time. The spammers will figure out a way to encode the proper resopnse if you leave the question the same forvever.

i would really love to know how to make a script which i could tellt o go to a site and extract certain things? mean im not php expert but, it would be a really cool. Lol. also i would like to either get a "bot" script firstly it would be great for testing the security and wuality of the stuff i have and show weaknesses o in it.Anyone hae one or know where i could get one?...Dan

I think one of the big 3 were working on a system where you have to evaluate images.

So you may be shown 9 pictures and asked to click on the picture of a blue bike, a cat, a tree or some other random selection.

Not only does this system seem to be botproof, It could also be fun (more fun than capchas at least).

The one I have on my site (phpbb) shows a series of about a dozen pictures and then asks you to identify which pictures are of animals. I've only had a couple of people (with dial-up) have a problem and it has been very effective. I can get a link to the mod if anyone is interested.

The only downside is the animals are all cats.
