We've all experienced the tons of SEO, um fertilizer. I have noticed that about half of the practices break down into something that would better be called 'Search Friendly' instead of optimization. I've even seen a few blog posts on the subject of search friendliness.

These are the things that tend to help users too:
  • good titles
  • good use of H1/2/3/4...
  • micro-formats
  • clean HTML
  • URLs
  • yada yada yada
So, I'm wondering what if we had a new topic for 'search friendly' discussions that could be separate form the SEO spammy stuff (articles, directories, forum spam, etc...)

I think it might be a good idea. It might be nice to help users like me who aren't really good with SEO. I would like to make my sites more search engine friendly, but I get overwhelmed when I look at SEO articles.

"SEO" has always been a o i know what it is now.. no wait what? subject

at first - no clue
after somelooking i came to the assumption that SEO could be clased asalmost what Paul said, having good titles, using good html (H1/2/3, <p> etc) standardised code, using as much meta as u can shove in there :P
good (appropriate) keywords and a good description.
and of course submitting your site to as many searchengines and directories you can and also backlinks...

now however i have seen soem rather confusing stuff which seems to make it something else...

am i right am i wrong?

Also yea i do agree a search engine friendly one which maybe could be more for lamens.. and people like erm.. me. would be good.

Thanks,
Dan.

Paul I think it's a good idea. We could probably create subforums for each aspect of seo

keywords
on-page
search friendly development
link building

I'd take it one step further, and separate the SEO topics by white hat, grey hat, and black hat. That way, newbies are aware that something is risky.

The only downside is that the mods will have to be vigilant and pay attention to the posts and figure out where they go.

Good call, though, Paul.

I just gave dude a $50 bill and some sticky-icky, and he gave me access to DNS records for ten minutes while his boss was on break. I went in and changed the record for webmaster-talk.com so it points at great-library.com. I already got more page views in the past hour than in all the time I've been running my blog.

Is this white hat, or grey hat?

Seriously, I think there's a lot of merit to this idea, but I'm not sure it makes sense in a forum, at least not this one. This place tends to discourage black and grey practices, and the bad guys almost never admit or even believe they're the bad guys. Remember Varsity talking about his software that collections email addresses and blogs that take comments, and thought he wasn't a spammer? I think everyone would just post in the white hat forum because that's the one with traffic.

Yeah, I thought of that, John...that's what I was referencing with the downside. The only counter idea I could come up with is sub-sub-forums (SEO --> White Hat --> Architecture), but that's too much navigation. And like you said, the Vasity-types won't read most of it.

Tough call.

to be honest i think some of that dont need all those seperate forums, and i very much doubt the admins here will go for it. maybe the sub topic would be better as stickied threads?

I was just thinking one extra topic "Search Friendly" as opposed to SEO.
