I know HTML. I wouldn't call myself a web "master". I need to create a membership site where users can create their own profiles and other users can browse for them by age, sex, and whatever else.

I was looking at scripting software like Boonex dolphin, and other dating script software. Should I go that route, or is there a way I can do it from scratch? I'm completely broke so I can't even afford Boonex until tax time. I have no patience at this point. This has been a work in progress for like 4 months.

any "dating" site script can do this just depends on what server side code and database you are running.

What you need is a) Some server side code like ASP.NET or PHP and b) A database backend such as SQL Server Express or MYSQL.

To create a login and search facility in my opinion is much easier with ASP.NET, as it practically manages the login system for you without writing any code

It depends if you are serious about it's success. IF you are, a custom solyution is the best, why? because you have control of the code / modifications / additions.
