Hi,

Total newbie here! I really hate to be a bother or sound like an idiot ...but dad always said a "hundred dumb questions is better than one dumb mistake"

so heres my problem,

I bought a website that I want to move from one host to another.

my web host guy tells me he cant help me move the site because he dont know where the data base files are at.

questions:

1. can someone tell me how to find and move the mysterious files

2. are data base files stored somewhere other than in the site files? (there is a 'fps' directory that have data.sql files)

3. should these type of files really hold up the move of the site? Or is my guy blowing smoke..cuz he dont want to help...or dont know how to<G>

other info:
the site is using My SQL on Ipower.com

the builder/desgner of the site is nowhere to be found...no help there

ANY help will be appriciated! I am totaly frustrated.

Thanks in advance!

1.& 2. No because they don't exist. Well they do actually, but not in a way you can easily transfer over. When you are down to moving physical MySql files you have probably reached desperation point with a dead server and no viable backup.

3. See above and Yes he probably is.

What do you have to admin the database? Usually it would be phpMyAdmin.

because all you would need to do is export the tables and data into a text file using that tool. Or several files if the database is quite large.

then port it over to the new host database.

I cant find a myadmin.php

there are some FPS files:
FPS
CONTROL-folder has
FUNCTION- folder.....it has php files for checklongin, sendmail, submits, functions
INCLUDES- folder....it has php files for login, logout, aduser, payments, vpayments, registration, notes etc

DATABASE- folder has database.sql-file database.zip -file

FUNCTIONS- folder..it has php folders for... all, login, logout, pass-loc, pay, register, succsess

these all look like database folders and files to me....there is an adduser admin page I can get into for membership records.

could I save the membership info and set up a new database on the new host?

The members would all have to re-register..but I could email them at least and explain the situation.

phpMyAdmin will probably not exist physically on the site.

Database folder these are possibly the original setup files for the structure and data.
The rest will be the scripts that the site runs on.

And of course they would all rush back to re-register ... NOT!

Ideally you need somebody who knows the script you are using and how your hosting database is set up.

find out how you backup your data and that is your starting point for the DB transfer.

Okay I did it!!!!!!
There is a button on the c/pannel for Manage MySQL....Low and behold ..guess what was in there..???

Bet you got it on the first try!

The database files...so I backed them up....downloaded them to my computer ..(Just common sense)....then uploaded them to the server I want to move to...

now hopefully someone can help me move the site!

Thank you sooooo much for pointing me in the right direction!

Geeze I love forums!
