hi guys i really hope you can help mewith this 1 ... i startedusing access about a week ago ad have to design a database for a company that i have just started workin for ... i have had a few stumbeling blocks on things such as relationships with tables however i think i have sorted them now .. but the thing that iss bugging me the most is that i cant seem to grasp the calculations part .. basicly what i need to do is produce a formula that will automaticly update my database when things are changed e.g. i have a table called costs and this includes things like pay seller, agents fees, legal fees , legal fees 2, HIPS fees, survey fees,additions,tax/duty and total costs and contingency (+5%) .. basicly i am trying to create a formula to add all of these up and work out the total costs at the end and whenever i change the data it will update it all for me ( a bit like how exel does it ) however no matter what i do i just cant seem to do it .. i really hope that someone can help me on this as its racked my brains .. i have looked at tutorials and everything but it just doesnt seem to be working for me ... i hope someone can help me ..thanks in advance Adam.

Why would you be expected to build a database involving fairly complex financial calculations when you have only been using the worlds worst "database" for a week????

Either you have BSed your way into the job and are now completely out of your depth, or your employers are stupid.

NOBODY (family or not) should be letting ANYONE design a system that could result in a financial law suit if it has any errors in the calculations, if they have had NO previous experience

at the end of the day m8 im not here to argue with you but im just learning (hence my task given to me ) and i thought that the best thing to do would be to come on here and ask people that have the best knowlage to help me, every1 needs to start somewhere and i dont think that you were born in the know how to create a databse as soon as you were given one infront of you, everyone has to learn somwhere, all im askin for is a little bit of help as a result i will get it right and the will be no law suits that will arise if you or someone else can help me.

Please refrain from using "txt spk" in your posts.

Yes, everyone should start somewhere! BUT NOT ON AN APPLICATION THAT HAS LEGAL IMPLICATIONS.

Certainly I did not "start off" knowing how to build database applications, but I learnt by building record/CD/tape/book collection databases NOT an application for calculating taxable payments or duty payable transactions.

ok but do you really think that this database will be used without being fully checked out ??? .. and as far as it goes for the databases that you started on i think that it would be the best option to strat on a database that actually has a point in the buisness im dealing with .. fair enough you had started on the simple things as you said but it means that i will have to create another database after that and start all over again .. plus they are only tables that i have put in and it will be checked out once it is compleated but i wonder if it ever will as when i ask for help i get moderators on my back that give me abuse i.e you !.. and i dont see why ? :S like i said all i want is a little bit of help from people and what do i get .. you saying that i BS my way into the job .. it makes me wonder why you commented on my post if you are not going to help me out .. could it be because you feel the importance and authority to intimidate people because of your experiance ?

No problem. You have a nice life now.

http://www.quackit.com/database/tutorial/

AND maybe you should go and learn that forums do not exist to hold your hand and teach you how to become a database "expert" overnight.
They can help with specific problems.

But learning the basics you need to do for yourself.

Adam,

If I may jump in here, there is the key called the enter key. One use it to create paragraphs so that what they are posting is easy to read.

Proper or semi-proper grammar call for some words to be Capitalized.

Firefox has this thing called a spell-checker. It won't get all your errors, but it will catch most.

If you want to be taken seriously, consider these things. No one is going to take the time to try and help when you post something that looks like a 5th grader posted it:

Maybe you should.

Believe it or not, your posts are very, very difficult to read. When you're asking people for advice, remember that they'll be doing you a favor when they give you an answer. They are not obligated to go out of their way to help you, nor are you entitled to receive that help.

Act accordingly.

Okay fellows, be kind. You have no idea who you are running down, what his limitations are or how you will hurt him. You can kindly tell someone that what he is trying to do is not a simple task and beyond a help forum. Perhaps suggesting a beginners book would have been good advice. By the way - MS Access is not the worlds worst database. I am an Access developer and many use it and find it a good desktop front end tool.

Shame on you - very opinionated and unkind!
