What Database to use? - Not a DBA!!

Can anyone out there advise me on user friendly database software to use - Preferably not too expensive?

I a company with thousands of photos and need to put them in a database that 5 people on PCs and 1 on a Mac can search, access and download, either locally or online.

I am a graphic designer for print and don't know coding so something very simple to set up would be great.

Does this exist?

Many thanks,

Tiki

Not really.

The database servers obviously do in the form of Access, MySQL, PostGre etc, but the tools to search the data will have to be written.
Unless you want to install a local webserver and install something like Coppermine or Menalto Gallery on it.

Sharepoint is for letting people setup their own "website" to make their documents available to others.

What it sounds you are needing is a "tagging" and retrieval system.

Thanks, does this mean I could use use Coppermine or Menalto Gallery without writing any code for the search and retrieve tools I need, if I set up WAMP as a local server?

Sorry if my questions are annoying, I am lost in this area. I was hoping there would be a simple user friendly piece of software to buy that would be more automatic and intuitive without being a DBA

Thanks for all your help,

Dara

I guess you have the wrong idea of what a database is.

A database is merely the storeroom for data, it then needs a database server to manage the storage and retrieval mechanisms.
Applications then interact with the dB Server to produce the required results and facilitate methods of storage and retrieval suitable for end users who do not (nor have the need to) know exactly how the "backend" works.

They have a user interface (GUI) to handle the various functions.

THAT is the purpose of the image gallery. It is an application that is specifically written to facilitate the storage, indexing, categorising searching and retrieval of digital pictures from a database that is located on a database server.

You never need to know how it does what it does, just that it does do it.
