Making a theft proof database?

Hi there,

Recently, my friend had his list of customers stolen, and another company took a lot of his customers. I know it was his own fault for using Microsoft Access, as it is very unsecure, but is there someway to make your database like "steal" proof or something you can put in there so you know when another company is phoning your customers, like fake number or email address or something that is only in that database and the only way people could be phoning/emailing it is by stealing that database??

Help would be much appreciated...I feel i have to sleep with my laptop under my pillow! lol

Thanks

Don't use Access, and if you do, put it in a location above the site root so it cannot be downloaded.

Other than ( Like Chris said,, Dont use access... )

Make sure your server is very secure. ( No root ssh logins )
Make sure you clean every user inputted variable ( to stop injections etc )
ONLY allow people to your DB who should have access.

In the case of Mysql etc..
Make sure your scripts use a special user for access.. IE:
Dont tell your scripts the root username and password.

Only allow the "special user" access to update or read the db..
Dont allow drops etc.

Other than that, You could encrypt all data sent to the DB with key only your scripts use.. ( Makes things a little more complicated for the theif )

Always encrypt passwords and use a SALT on passwords.. So the theif cant use a rainbow table to get the password.
