Whatsup everyone. I was just wondering what would it cost to build a site that was database driven, preferrably in PHP and MYSQL. The site is www.boredinclovis.com. It would basically be a local site, that users could setup a basic profile with name, pic, their personal info and what not, kinda like myspace, but the site would also have a place for users to upload videos, and jokes for everyone on the site to see and use. I would also like a bulletin board setup where people could post messages for parties, local events and what not. I know this is a lot to ask, so that is why i am wondering about estimates. I would like to also possibly add other features in the future, so it would be nice for the designer to be able to add other features in the future. I hope to eventually be able to do all of this when I am a bit more into my web design courses in college, but I would really like to have a site up sooner than that. Just let me know what you think as far as costs and what not.

Well, it looks like you'd be needing more of a programmer than a designer.

vBulletin is a forum script (in use here) that should be able to do what you want to do with some modifications. The software costs $160 and can be ordered here.

Take a look at the script and see if it's what you need. If it is, I'd be happy to get you started.

Christhirt's price range sounds around the level we would give for a rough quote too.

What you need to do though is start listing exactly what features you need for the site. I know that you only gave a rough outline, but I could give a copy of that to my team and end up with 6 totally different site ideas and price ranges.

As a first step it could be a good idea to break down the site into the core areas and then start just listing bullet points about what each area would need to do. As well as getting it clear in your own mind - and clear in the mind of ever who develops your project this will also give the designer confidence that you know what you are after (which can reduce the quote by stopping them chucking on a big contingency fee). I know that we always quote lower for well organised project run by a knowledgeable team as their will be less contact hours - and therefore less cost to us.

I have been really busy with classes for the last couple of weeks, but I see what you are saying as far as getting a more detailed report of what I am seeking. I will get started on that and will get in contact with you all after I get that done. Thanks for the information.

I suggest breaking your site down into sections. Then define what you want to be done in each section.

Then I can quote you by section and provide you with deadlines for each section.

Sounds like an interesting project tho, that I'd be happy to work on.
