No CONTENT is the BEST way to improve a site - it's pointless having a site with no good content because every time someone actually gets to your site (unlikely through link exchanges anyway), they'll leave without a sale/clickthrough because they'll think the site is rubbish.

Improve your content so that it's something worth lining to - that way, people will recommend you to others from their own sites, and you'll get TRAFFIC, not worthless backlinks from spammers that don't give you any traffic!

The best way would be to become more active on a few forums ... and adding a signature that points to your site.

If you are submitting your site to directory, then you already gaining backlinks once your site will be approve. Forum posting also contributes backlinks. The total number of backlinks on your site will be displayed once google finish updating backlinks.
