Try this search and notice the first result - actually the first several are like this.
Next is a search for a famous place and the top result is a map, the next one says "news results" so I assume it's the top item from what you'd get if you did the same search on news.google.com, but I'm just guessing. Then at the bottom of the page are three photos - again, probably like if you put the same search phrase into images.google.com. Other searches include a bunch of images along the top, but I can't think of any good examples to show.
When I search for a company's name, if they have stock, the first result is a graph and data table of the stock's performance.
Remember the old adage that Yahoo and all them are "portals" and Google went with their own thing, simplified interface, all that - meaning Google is unique in that they don't have any content of their own? That's really not true anymore what with their huge and exclusive collection of book data, their satellite map collection, financial data on companies. Then they're also great at rooting out good content on the rest of the web, but they have plenty of their own content to leverage, too now.
I don't know what that means for SEO, but I wanted to point out what I've been noticing, and turn the floor over to people who know stuff.
