SERP Disappeared Overnight in GOOGLE

Till August 13, 2007, I did have a decent SERP in Google, but the next morning all of the sites disappeared from the top places. No where in the top 20..or even top 40. Even the blog results disappeared overnight. What could be the reason?
That was the issue when Google Webmaster tool reported that the site has been crawled on Aug8. But today when i checked out the same, the last crawled date was on Aug13. Interestingly from Aug13th onwards, I'm facing this problem.
It may be on Aug6th or so ... I've changed the images in my site something like from superaffiliatehandbook.jpg to superaffiliatehandbook-affiliate-marketing-ebook-graphic.jpg .
Is this anything to do with the fall of SERP? Except this change i've nothing added or deleted.
Please help me in this regard.

Have you lost traffic, or have you just lost ranking when you look for your keywords (there's a difference)?

...and who would be looking for an image containing those keywords?
Simply put, you're not doing anything unique or original. You're running a downloads site. So does Tucows, download.com, and about a million others. What makes you special when compared to them? What makes you different? What makes you stand out? Nothing.
That's the most important aspect of SEO, and the one all the link-mongers end up missing completely...you need to have something unique and original to link to, and you don't have it.
You're also nofollowing half the links on your home page, and I don't see a good reason to do that either.

hi
well I heard that the file names has got to do with something like that.
eg: word_word.jpg is better than word-word.jpg
meaning underscore is better than dash!
Is this true?

It works for me, John. Call your Intarweb service provider. They seem to be the problem.

On Sep 2nd I noticed that my site got its place back into the Google...this time on 2nd page. But sometimes I see there...the other times...it's again off...no where again. Immediately on the next day Sep3rd the site again vanished. May be something like DANCING. So presently what i could do is...leave that for sometime?
I've noticed somewhere that the big directories are also affected by Google Algo Change. I just remember that On Aug 13th or Aug 14th, I've submitted my sites to AVIVA directory. Does it cause any negative effect?

Pages that rely on links from directories, forum sigs, blog comments, link swaps, link schemes or any other kind of self placed link for SERP positions will always be susceptible to Google algo changes.

Organic links from other people's sites - links that people have placed on their own site because they want to recommend you to their own visitors and because tehy think your web site is valuable. If you aren't getting any "natural" links like this at the moment, you should try improving your content and making it worth linking to

I have lost serps in multiple sites. With almost all the sites, it was because there was no unique content. Initially sites ranked because of good linking. However in 5-6 months all sites lost ranking.

The site comes on the TOP place stays for 2-3 hours and disappears. Why is it?

I can't say why its fluctuating too much, but as I said above, for the long term, concentrate on providing interesting, useful unique content on your site to get links, rather than depending on link exchanges or other things, that could make your site disappear in a single day, if there is a change in the Google algorithm.

The question is...why are you wasting so much time "rank checking", which is a useless exercise at the best of times, when you should be fixing the problems within your site?
