Does anyone have an idea on what is the maximum number of links you can have in the sitemap.xml file? Is there even a limit?

Leon

I sold a domain recently that had 13,000 pages (all of them in the site map as I generated it from a database.

After 3 years, Google had managed to index about 3,000 of these pages and I had an XML sitemap also.

Hi there

Persoanlly i would advise against large sitemaps, i have a very bad experiance with a large sitemap, that saw my site drop down serps, as soon as i removed the large sitemap my serps returned, not sure why but im not makin that mistake again i think there was in excess of 80,000 page mind.

Agree to you......its better to have an index file for small sitemaps in case file is large from 5 to 10 mb or have more than 30,000 urls.

Chris

50,000 (from memory)

but yeah, you can put more links in the XML file but Google will only ever index 50,000 in each visit at most.

PS: I wonder if Google has ectually ever eaten 50,000 pages in one sitting...?

It is advised to compress the sitemap file and upload it, if you are having huge number of links.
sitemap.gz

Q: Can I zip my Sitemaps or do they have to be gzipped?
Please use gzip to compress your Sitemaps. Remember, your Sitemap must be no larger than 10MB (10,485,760 bytes), whether compressed or not.
