Hi all.

Just a thought I was having a while back...

Which might Google prefer:

www.mydomain.com/mypage.htm

or:

www.mydomain.com/mypage/

Any thoughts...?

/mypage.htm is one of your directory files
/mypage/ is your folder

So, returning to my question...

Which would you think (in your opinion) Google might prefer...?

Why would they prefer one or the other ???
They report to the users what the spider have seen, nothing more.

If you have a directory, then the link will present a directory.
If it's a page, then it'll be a page.

There are no preferences here.

Neither. If you were developing a search engine that returned the page whose content best fit a searcher's query, would you factor in whether the url structure was www.mydomain.com/mypage.htm or www.mydomain.com/mypage ? I wouldn't, because it has no bearing.

My page is a good or bad fit regardless of the url structure.

In my opinion these 2 are good for Google, but I prefer with .html
Also in link like: www.mydomain.com/mypage/ you could have a problem with css/images including.

I raise dthe question because a friend of mine optimised a site by creating folder and filname structures that were VERY descriptive, overly so I thought.

Well, yeah.

I looked at the code, shed loads of CSS inline and the tables were generated by DreamWeaver.

Need I say more...?

But what about the text on the pages, the anchor text used for internal navigation, the page titles etc etc. Did that also have the same keywords & phrases as the URLs used?

THEY are the things that count far far more than having keyworded URLs.

Looking at one thing in isolation and assuming that is what makes a difference is a dangerous practice that will ALWAYS take you down the wrong route.

I've documented what to look at before and stuck it up on one of my websites because I get a lot of clients who read a little and ask a lot but it was helful for me as-well, keeping all the information in one place for referral.
