For all of you that use Google Analytics I'm wondering what kind of percentage your Bounce Rate averages out at?

Our bounce rate averages around 15% and I'm undecided if this is high or low

I've noticed that one of our categories has a 40% bounce rate which I think is unacceptable ~ four out of every ten people who visit the page leave instantly. This happens to be the category with the "busiest landing page" so obviously I'll need to try and filter out some of the products.

I find Google Analytics fascinating, I literally spend hours pouring over the information to try and find areas to improve.

On a seperate note, I call for an Analytics forum to be added here at W-T

I think your bounce rate can be interpreted differently depending on what your site is about. For example if you have a site that has information about computer viruses, you might expect a lot of people to search for something dodgy they see running in their task manager, find the information and leave after visiting that one page. In that case, I wouldn't be bothered by a high bounce rate - people just want to find information about one thing and go. If you've got a celebrity gossip site though, maybe I'd expect visitors to mooch around a bit though.

My bounce rate is usually around 65% and I was happy with that until you started throwing aroun dnumbers like 15%!

Yes, I was a bit happy with my 40% until I saw your 15%.

Do you want to elaborate on that so that the rest of us can understand? Also, Google will see that you've made a useful post and will give you more PR via your sig links.

my idea about this bounce rate in google analytics is its all about the ups and downs of your daily traffic showed in the graph. a low bounce rate is good and high bounce rate is bad...well, that is just my idea about it.

Nope.

Either can be good in certain circumstances and equally both can be bad in different circumstances.
If you have a landing page that has a "call to action" then a high "bounce rate" is perfectly acceptable if not desired.

Google Analytics has a lot to answer for! It's given the masses a whole new bunch of metrics and associated data where they have no idea what it means and even less of an idea on how to interpret it.
