I have heard about sites that you can buy Google Page rank to link into your sites. Is this a good thing? If so what are the sites?

You can buy a link to your site, but do you really need it?

pr gives you better rankings in search and improves your traffic. you should try to acheive good pr (at least 7) coz you could then sell links and get some cash

I know what Mark V is getting at--I too have seen people advertise that they can specifically raise your PR. I've always assumed that the way they do it is by submitting your link around websites and what not; essentially google spamming until your site is in "existence" with a higher PR.

Personally, I don't think it's really worth it unless you absolutely have no time; you can think of it as hiring a short-term web publicity personnel. But as always, be cautious with who you purchase this "service" from; it's always safer to do it yourself.

I think that you should improve PR by yourself. It is safe and effective.

Send me a PM. I'll discuss this topic in more detail. Think of PR buying/selling like the stock market. Buy low...Sell high.

Try to trade links with as many relevant people as possible. I also make sure to link to highly relevant websites no matter if they link back or not. Be sure that others use highly descriptive keywords in their links back to your website.

Theres the short version

Be aware that this will lower your PR, even if it does make your website more useful.

I've done it for a while and my pr has only gone up. I can't prove that it does work but can you prove that it doesnt? No one outside of Google really knows all that will effect pr thats why I stated that its what I do not its what you should do.

Plus, if this were the case, why would anyone link to relevant websites anymore? People would only trade links and thats it.

The Page Rank Calulation is based on a calulation that was orignally design in a to find out to and rank the popularity of node in a database. (I may have got details wrong) This has been admitted by google. The calulation is based on the idea that you ever time you link to another webpage you are effectivly voting for it, and this will raise the webpage value of important i.e. Page rank. Every webpage would start off with say a value of 1, now it can vote worth 85% of it's value meaning to start with it's vote is worth 0.85 now this value will be devided between the pages it links to, so if it has two outbound links it will assign both of them 0.425 so the pages it links two have a value of 1.425 (this may vary, in practice) , now this calulation has to be repeated multiple time because otherwise page rank would never travel past one page. So Every time you link out of your site you will be passing a fraction of your pagerank to the other person site that otherwise you have passed internally and as this equation increments multiple times you will lose more and more.

You may not have noticed the loss for a number of reason, firstly you are proable slowely increasing your IBL which will offset this effect and ever time all of the other wedsite you are lnking with are fluctuating in pagerank so it would be very hard to tell.

This is a fairly sound principle and can be proven by the way people manage to bunch up page rank into the optimised pages. It is also the basie behind the Page Rank Calulator. So you can see it in action here:

http://www.webworkshop.net/pagerank_calculator.php3

Why would people link to relevant website, for a few reason. Peoples motivation are not always to gain more page rank, some website want to provide valuable content some sell links, some are unaware of the loss of page rank, lot of website don't rely on search engine for traffic, some have more Page rank than they need for the uncompetitive search term they get traffic from. Another good reason is because google has tons more variables which it works into the ranking equation and one of them may well be element of pages that you link to, page rank is only part of the equation and most people goal is for traffic and not pagerank.
