How is it possible for a site to be a PR4 and not have one single backlink in Google?

Google doesn't show a complete list of backlink, usually it only shows backlinks that PR4 or above (however lately people have been seeing some lower) However the backlinks that are not shown still count toward calulating pagerank.

Page Rank is not only calculated by backlinks, there are other factors too.

Well yes it is mostly inbound links from other websites, but your internal links count also. So your linking structure is important in your website.

You mean like all of the links from my sub-pages to my home page and my navigation bar to my sub pages? How would I optimize these? Or does it matter?

I think your wrong, I believe page rank is only determined by your links to webpage and nothing else.

As far as optimising your internal website goes what you want to do is basically make sure every page links to the one where you want to have the most pagerank, i.e. you homepage. And perferreable if ou want to be really effecient only link to you site map with a proper link and then use java script links for the rest of your pages, this mean that the spider will be able to index your site by going though the site map however you will not give away page rank to the pages you don't want it on.

P.S. including your anchor text in links to the pages you want optimised will help too.

Don`t agree with this.. PageRank is solely calculated by BLs, but one thing i will differ, its not the quantity, its the quality.

PageRank from higher Pr will fetch you more positive result. You don`t even need to have a link from a site having same theme. All you need to have is a external link. Link from a site having the same theme will help you in boosting your rankings..

Another things are when getting links from external pages check few things.
1. See if PR of the page in question is not blocked
2. Total no. of links on the page.
3. IP address - links from different Class C IP address benefit you more in SERP.
4. Position of your link..

-- Just my opinion ---

Nandini, this is something I have never seen any real evidence of affecting passed PR. Would quite like to do some more research into this , have you seen any example or read any papers on it?

Or are you talking from the point of view that a link at the top of the page has a much higher chance of generatering click because it is more visable. Or is this in reference to the surrounding text, i.e. it's good to be under a H1 tag with your keyphrase in? Nixies

As I understand it, the number of Outbound links on a page may have a considerable impact on the PR value passed to the receiving site. This is especially true when there are >100 outbounds. I've read many posts across multiple forums on this and it seems to make sense.

*assumption* If the formula for passing Google PR value is based on PR value of page divided by number of outbound links * factor (some say approx. 85%)*/assumption*. Having a "cutoff" for the number of outbound links considering the assumption would make sense *my opinion*.

Getting back to the topic at hand, my thought is that being in that 1st 100 outbound links (or whatever the true Google count is) makes the difference between passing PR relevent value or not. IMHO.
