The fastest and easiest way to gain back links I think is through Forum Postings. Put your keywords as your Anchor Text in your signature...

Well.......signature links from forums are often no-follow and google does not consider these links as backlinks.....but ya....thse links can help you in terms of gettng traffic.......

Volunteer to be a guest writer at a blog or a site that is related to your site. Write an informative article for the other webmaster. Place some of your links in the article.

This is a win-win situation. You get a link. The other webmaster gets free content.

Some people will suggest to submit the article to article directories, but I disagree. In my opinion, this will create duplicate content (if 1000 people all download your article, they all now have the same content, causing their pages to not get indexed, thus you not having links)

easiest way would be, seems you are already posting here, that you setup your signature (User CP) that includes link to your website. Won't cost you anything... Truth, Google doesn't consider taht kind of links as a real backlinks, but it will help for a traffic fight, which latter effects to a better Page Rank and Link Popularity, which is actually a primary goal of inbound likns. Most valueble inbound links gives websites like Open Directory Project - DMOZ, Yahoo! Directory, or web site About.com where can you freely publish an article which include your link. Or publish article at GoArticles.com also with your link, etc... In generally, always try to leave your link at websites with highest Page Rank, but only where are you allowed to do so, otherwise it could be considered even as spam...

By far the best way (the only way?!) to make backlinks is using the <a> HTML tag and specifying the address of your site in the href attribute.

I hope this answers your question on how you MAKE backlinks...

The way I see it is that it all depends on the competitors volume in the niche you willling to promote your site.

I would say if Google shows lets say 30-40mil results on the kwd phrase you want to see your site in top 5-10, and you have a newbee site - just leave it (even if you have super-duper unique content - it won't help); buying tonns of links and daily link exchanges won't help.

Instead try to analyze which keywords you can promote with less blood... basically those will be low search kwd phrases... which will soon lead you to what you desired to see...
