"How do I rank #1"? I figure once I get to the top of the list I'll sell an EBook for $99.99 and tell people "Your goal is to be so busy you don't have time for SEO".

It takes time and lots of effort on your side to rank No. 1 in google. You have to do on page optimization and offpage optimization. Link building and anchor text in link is important factor in getting top rank not only in google but almost all major search engines.

The key to ranking #1 on the phrase "How to Rank #1" is to tell everyone how you ranked #1 for the phrase "How to Rank #1", and provide lots of testimonials from people whose names also match their initials (e.g. A.S. from Toronto) so that people know you're legitimate.
If you really want to impress people and use full names in testimonials, try to select the names of dead African dictators (the registrar Dodora used to do this back in the day) and then you'll be even better.
Oh...and don't forget to mention buzzwords at every possible opportunity. You know, like "do onpage optimization and offpage optimization" and "link building" and "two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun."

there is nothing easier then knowing what to do.
Pick your keyword
Run the search
record who is at the top
check current number one search engine saturation and number and quality of backlinks
do more then current number one
By following the above steps you will get to top position in any keyword search.
Just that simple...

Simple. Add the "Customize Google" FireFox extension. Do a search for "How do I rank #1" in Google. Then customize the page and put yourself in at number one. You can download the extension here: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/743
Honest, this has to be the best SEO tool EVER! I don't know why everyone isn't using it.

This is going to turn into one of those surreal threads full of bad advice by SEO wannabes who completely miss the point.
On the bright side, it's a great way to weed out the terminally ignorant.

It shouldn't be too hard . There's only five occurrences of that phrase in Google for me:
http://www.google.com/search?num=50&...22&btnG=Search

You Guys may be going about this the wrong way.
All you have to do is invent a new science, say spacktology, the art and science of why cracks mysteriously show up in sheet rock, and the rest is simple: - Do the math to prove your theory
- Invent the cure
- Write a book
- Produce a public service announcement
- Get quoted in the New England Journal of Medicine, and similar boring mags
- Appear on Leno, Letterman, etc
- and the easiest - get Al Gore to endorse it
And here's the trick, no-one shows up for that word at all
See... click here if you don't believe me spacktology - Simple!

Do that search without quotes...for some reason, Google likes having 50 results on the first page (at least it does for me, even though I don't have my preferences set that way).

Oh, that's actually my default Google preferences, that's probably why you're experiencing that high number.
