Hi all,
I have a client which cannot settle in a position in organic Google results. On the weekend they are position ~12 and move up to position ~4 by Monday.
Then they slide a few spots by the end of monday to position ~6 and by the end of the week back to ~12...
I have observed this pattern happening over the last 6 weeks - has anyone seen this "jumping" before?
It is a very competetive area "promotional products" and we are talking about organic results only, no PPC...
There is very little new content created daily and a few new links are created daily as well, nothing that I can see would justify this movement.

It takes weeks to move most of the sites and this one jumps up and down daily - any suggestions appreciated.

Thanks,

Val

don't worry about it too much. also, keep in mind that everybody gets different search results from google. Part of the algorithm is based on a user's search history and what results they select.

Are your tests being done with the same browser, on the same pc, with the same user logged in?

Paul,
Thank you.
I am being a bit thorough with the testing and am using 3 different pc's with IE6, IE7 Firefox and Opera. Sometimes Firefox and Opera will give a result which is 1 or 2 positions out from the IE but not when I force to get the results from the same Google farm (ip address)

The difference for the client is 40 visitors per day at position 12 and 400 visitors per day at position 4.

Thank you,

Val

Google's testing how the page converts in those various positions. What you need to do is remind Google of that relevance of the page(s). Here's what I'd do:

- Grab a healthy amount of powerful relevant pages linking to you. You can buy them, get bloggers to blog about you or whatever it takes, but you need a few more dominant links coming in.

- Setup a way to have fresh content coming onto that page daily. I'd recommend having the client setup a blog and then put the RSS feed on that page as "Recent Posts from our Blog". This will make the page look much fresher. You could even put a paragraph from the blog and have it rotate on that page. The goal here to to make the page appear fresh.

It's actually something that some webmasters have been reporting since late March. It's now called the "Dewey Update." If you have questions about these results, use this form to contact Google. I know it says "Report a Spam Result," but that's because the Google Webmaster Team is looking for quality results and wants to know about this shakeup. I recommend that you bring it to the attention of their team if you're still being impacted by it.

I've definitely noticed a lot of jumping around in the last month but I think it has settled down for the most part for many of my websites.

Yeah, There is alot of jumping going on, I noticed that a few weeks ago, when my site would get a few days of massive visitors, followed by some adequate days.

Did some research and found that I was jumping from around 12th to 2nd in the SERPs causing traffic spikes for that keyword.

I've noticed this as well, especially lately. One thing to consider is the age of the site. Newer sites tend to move more in google results.

I have noticed the same that my newer sites will jump around a lot in their positioning. Also it could be a good thing that google is visiting your site a lot which is why its constantly changing.

My site is pretty new compared to the competition so that could explain the big jumps.

You can't.
Given different datacenters, personalisation, geo-targeted results etc,

or maybe one way would be;
Sign in to a google account and activate the personalisation, then exclude all the pages/sites that rank higher than yours.

Nope.

NATURAL links that you get from having good content will help, but anything that you can do will not be of any great benefit.

The same thing happens to my site. The site is in my first sig link which oscillates between first and second page of the SERP between rank 5 and 14 for a particular keyword...
