How long does it usually take for backlinks to show up. This past week I have worked at getting some backlinks by posting on different forums, submitting articles, replying to blogs, submitting to directories, social networking and I even have several members who are spreading the word as well. Yet according to google I have exactly no backlinks. Does it just take some more time for these to register, or am I doing things completely wrong?

Google updates the backlinks they show usually around the same time as they push PR out to the toolbar, which is every 3 months or so. There's not exact time frame, but it seems to be about every 3 months.

However, they never show you all the backlinks they know about. It's just a random sample. Using Google to see what backlinks you have is kind of pointless since they don't really tell you.

Use Yahoo instead. You'll get a much better count.

Actually, I think using the Google Webmaster Tools will allow you to see all of your backlinks that Google has indexed, as well as a lot of other info. You'll have to verify your site first, but it's pretty quick.

The only backlinks I would worry about are the ones driving traffic to your site. Find out which ones via site logs / traffic stats.

It sucks though because I don't currently have access to these stats with my host

Just to corroborate what VM said. Webmaster Central will show all your links or most of them anyway. Links are always in flux so you'll never get an exact count from anyone. Webmaster Central does have good info beyond the links and it is worth signing up.

Work on links that get you traffic, that is my advice, I think that once you get the traffic the PR backlinks will come. As you will find your site being mentioned all over the place.

For me it all depends where the google bot is at the moment, I have had a site and backlinks in less the 6 minutes

I have a procedure I do for doing this and just tonight I am setting up a new website and had googlebot crawl the site less than a minute it visited

Then other pages from the same site it takes weeks to see results from google

google doesn't show backlinks everytime...
usually you will have a good view about it when they issue their PR...

It depends on how long it takes google bot to find those links. For instance, when I have a huge amount of sites link to a page on my site I find that those appear faster than just one or two sites linking to it. I guess Google sees them as more weight and provides them faster?

So far on my new forum no backlinks appear in google, but I have hundreds in yahoo, I think google doesn't update this as often.

Google updates backlinks regularly..But as far as showing them for you to see, about as often as they update pagerank

I have checked yahoo and I have 44 backlinks listed there. I still have none on google. It turns out a lot of them are from a thread on this site, lol.

My links taked 3 or 4 month to be seen in Google.

I have checked yahoo and I have 1113 backlinks listed there. I still have 40 backlinks on google.
